Monster of the Week seems like it's best set for groups that are heavy in improv. It's based around realizing that it's not really fun to have a mystery plot get sidelined because no one has the obscure science skill required or (even worse) no one sees the hairs under the mattress that leads to the next plot event. Trail of Cthulhu has the big 'twist' of being based around the investigative aspects. This holds true with most other games too, really. The important thing is the DM has a lot of freedom and is expected to actively manage the player's experience with the goal of making things enjoyable: Don't call for rolls unless both win/lose have dramatic and entertaining results. At least for the players!ĬoC has roots in early RPGs and as such has some 'trappings' of being complex: The percentile mechanics for example. I'm not familiar with Tremulous, but none of these are 'heavy' systems in my mind. Thank you preemptively for all your help! If there is a game that isn't one of the four I listed but matches what I am looking for, I am all ears. On top of that, from a brief skim ToC and CoC seem incredibly complex, especially for first time RPGers.I may be completely wrong on all fronts, having never played any of these games before.I would appreciate a note on the difference between these games from people who have played them and which one best suits what I am looking for. I then looked in to Tremulus but it felt too serious, same goes for Call of Cthulhu and Trail of Cthulhu. I am kind of familiar with the PbtA system so my instinctive leaning was towards Monster of the Week but it felt too much like a Buffy or Supernatural style show and not enough like the Lovecraftian style I was looking for. Not super railroady, allows the players to influence the story instead of me pushing them in a certain direction.Preferably set in or able to be adapted to modern times. Not too deadpan/hard roleplaying, must allow for goofs and japes.Narrative focused, not so much combat is preferable but understandable if unavoidable. The things I am looking for in a game is Fighting demons, monsters, curses and eldritch horrors, but with a stupid one liner.

Think along the lines of John Dies at the End, the Evil Dead series or Hellboy. Importantly I don't want this game to be too serious, I don't want to scare them off of tabletops with ridiculously complex systems or being too serious. I have never played anything other than DnD (like actually played, I have played a couple of oneshots for some other D20 games) and I would like a push in the right direction for what to pick. I am a huge fan of Lovecraftian horror and narrative focused games so I have been looking into which ones to play. I'm the GM since I'm the only one with any background knowledge and I want to make this special for my new group. These people have never played a tabletop before My original group have split up and I am looking to start a new group with some friends. I have been playing DnD of various editions (mostly 1e) for about 9 years and DMing for a year, with a couple of other tabletop games here and there. I'm a rather seasoned Tabletop RPGer however I have mostly relegated myself to Dungeons and Dragons.
